With the title music for Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, composer Jeff Toyne blew the jury away. Here Toyne tells us how he crafted the music to complement the show's visual style and create a vibrant and original score that gives a taster of what’s to come in this brilliant production.

Palm Royale required a unique musical style that would fuse legendary 60’s musical influences like Henry Mancini and Bernard Herrmann with a Latin twist, and a thematic richness that evolves throughout the show. The use of specific instruments like Chromatic Harmonica, Autoharp, Contrabass and Eb Clarinet, not to mention 21-piece big band combined with large orchestra paid homage to these vibrant sounds. The visual authenticity and detail on-screen was matched with live musician performances. I endeavoured to create music that enhanced the show's sonic identity and developed key themes for characters. The intricate Latin flavour woven into the score, with percussion and rhythmic transformations, accompanied by vocals inspired by Yma Sumac and the Swingle Singers, reflects the show's mix of comedy and drama.

It’s clear to see why he won!
